AlabamaPerfecting Enrollment for Alabama’s Kids

The Alabama Department of Public Health, in collaboration with the Alabama Medicaid Agency, will be leading the Perfecting Enrollment for Alabama’s Kids (PEAK) project as a grantee of the Maximizing Enrollment for Kids program. The Alabama State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Alabama Medicaid are administered in two separate state agencies. Alabama’s CHIP, known as ALL Kids, is housed at the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Medicaid Agency houses Medicaid for children, known as SOBRA. These programs aim to work closely to coordinate enrollment and retention of eligible children with family income up to 200% of the federal poverty level. ALL Kids and SOBRA use common eligibility rules and exchange data electronically.

The state has been making steady progress in its effort to enroll all eligible children in Medicaid and CHIP through a variety of ongoing strategies. Examples include developing systems to streamline enrollment through community partners (such as The Children’s Hospital in Birmingham) and increasing non-English application accessibility. Also, the state and Microsoft, Inc. are partnering in an information, referral, and application project known as the Camellia II Project. The project is intended to reduce the burden on citizens in need of health and social services by gathering information one time and sharing it across agencies and programs. As a grantee of the Maximizing Enrollment for Kids program, one way Alabama is hoping to increase enrollment of eligible children is to further develop, and enhance existing, community systems and partnerships to assist families with enrollment and renewal processes.

“I am committed to increasing the enrollment of eligible children in both the Medicaid and ALL Kids programs. I have a keen interest in seeing that Alabama’s children receive appropriate health coverage…” – Alabama Governor Bob Riley, 2008
